Amanwella

Nestled along Sri Lanka’s sun-kissed southern coast, Amanwella is a serene sanctuary that epitomizes barefoot luxury. Situated near the tranquil fishing town of Tangalle, this all-suite resort by Aman Resorts offers an idyllic escape where modernist architecture harmonizes with the island’s natural beauty.

Designed by the late Australian architect Kerry Hill, Amanwella draws inspiration from Sri Lanka’s own Geoffrey Bawa, the pioneer of “tropical modernism.” The resort’s clean lines, open-air layouts, and use of local materials—such as hand-hewn stone walls, terracotta tiles, and teak wood—create a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor spaces. Set on a 37-acre coconut grove that cascades down to a crescent-shaped beach, the property offers a tranquil setting for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Amanwella comprises 30 spacious suites, each featuring floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that open onto private terraces with plunge pools. The interiors are adorned in neutral tones, with sand-colored terrazzo floors and teak furnishings, creating a calming ambiance. While the plunge pools offer privacy, they are enclosed by high walls and may lack views of the surrounding landscape.

The resort’s restaurant and bar are housed in glass-walled pavilions that overlook the 47-meter infinity pool and the Indian Ocean beyond. Guests can savor à la carte breakfasts and Sri Lankan-inspired cuisine while taking in stunning ocean views.

Amanwella’s location offers access to a variety of natural and cultural attractions. Guests can embark on safaris in nearby national parks like Yala and Udawalawe, home to elephants, leopards, and diverse birdlife. Whale watching excursions are available between December and April, offering sightings of blue whales and spinner dolphins . Closer to the resort, the Rekawa Turtle Conservation Project provides opportunities to observe sea turtles nesting on the beach.

Amanwella offers a refined retreat that combines minimalist design with the natural allure of Sri Lanka’s southern coastline. Whether lounging by the infinity pool, exploring nearby wildlife reserves, or enjoying a private spa treatment, guests are enveloped in a sense of tranquility and understated elegance.
