Taste of Oakville is one of the rare wine events where legendary producers aren’t scattered across a full weekend, but gathered together in one place. One moment you're sipping Cabernet Sauvignon from Opus One, the next you're discussing vineyard sites with the team from Favia, then comparing styles from Harlan Estate, Far Niente, Morlet, Heitz Cellar, To Kalon Vineyard Company, Peter Michael, Nickel & Nickel, Schrader, and dozens more. For anyone who loves Napa Valley wine, it's almost overwhelming, in the best possible way.
This year's event was especially significant because it marked one of the first major public tastings at the newly reimagined Robert Mondavi Winery. Walking through the new Robert Mondavi Winery feels familiar and entirely new at the same time. The historic Arch & Tower still welcomes visitors just as it has since 1966, but beyond it is a beautifully redesigned winery that feels brighter, more contemporary, and thoughtfully connected to the surrounding vineyards. Expansive terraces frame sweeping views of the Mayacamas Mountains, creating the perfect backdrop for an afternoon devoted to Oakville's greatest wines. It's hard to imagine a more fitting venue. Robert Mondavi helped introduce Napa Valley to the world, and now the winery begins its next chapter by welcoming many of Oakville's most celebrated producers under one roof.
Why Oakville Matters
This small stretch of Napa Valley has become synonymous with some of the world's most sought-after Cabernet Sauvignon. That reputation dates back more than 150 years, when pioneer H.W. Crabb planted what would become To Kalon Vineyard, helping establish Oakville as one of California's premier wine-growing regions. Soon after, John Benson founded Far Niente, another estate that remains an icon today. More than a century later, Oakville continues to produce wines that define Napa Valley on the world stage.
One Appellation, Dozens of Personalities
One of my favorite parts of Taste of Oakville is discovering just how many different expressions can come from the same appellation. People often think of Napa Cabernet as one style, but that's far from reality. Some wines are elegant and restrained, with violets, red currants, and beautifully polished tannins. Others are bold and powerful, layered with blackberry, cassis, dark chocolate, espresso, and remarkable concentration. Some are approachable today, while others clearly have decades ahead of them. That's what makes tasting Oakville side by side so fascinating. The vineyards may share the same appellation, but every winemaker interprets it differently.
More Than a Grand Tasting
What elevates Taste of Oakville beyond a traditional walk-around tasting is the access. Throughout the afternoon, guests have the opportunity to speak directly with the people representing these remarkable estates. Conversations naturally drift from vintages and vineyard practices to barrel programs, farming philosophies, and the subtle decisions that shape every bottle. Those moments often become just as memorable as the wines themselves.
As a sommelier, I always leave with a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship behind each label and usually a much longer wish list of bottles to add to my cellar.
An Afternoon Worth Savoring
With thoughtful hors d’oeuvres, sweeping vineyard views, and a relaxed atmosphere, guests are encouraged to slow down rather than rush from table to table, creating an experience designed for discovery.
By the end of the afternoon, it becomes abundantly clear that Oakville is not defined by a single winery or even a single style of Cabernet Sauvignon, but by an extraordinary collection of producers, each contributing something unique to one of the world’s most celebrated wine regions.
With the beautifully restored Robert Mondavi Winery reopening its doors, there couldn't have been a better place to celebrate Oakville's past, present, and future.
