Piocho Ranch and Happy Canyon Vineyard
Where Wine, Polo, and Tranquility Converge in Santa Ynez
One of the most serene and stunning ways to experience the Santa Ynez Wine Country is by visiting Piocho Ranch. Named for the Chumash word meaning “where the two rivers meet and go to heaven,” Piocho feels exactly that—otherworldly. Majestic horses roam its verdant pastures, while rows of immaculate vineyards stretch toward the horizon.
Tucked into the hills of the ranch is Happy Canyon Vineyards, named after the Happy Canyon AVA of Santa Barbara County, established in 2009. Known for its warmest microclimate in the Santa Ynez Valley, this AVA is perfectly suited for growing Bordeaux varietals of exceptional quality.
During my visit, I had the pleasure of meeting Sean Pitts, Executive Winemaker of Happy Canyon Vineyards. Sean guided us on an intimate vineyard tour followed by a tasting at the Vineyard House, where we sipped through their current releases paired with delicious small bites.
Wines We Tasted:
- 2021 Piocho Sauvignon Blanc – A blend of 91% Sauvignon Blanc and 9% Sémillon. Aromatic and fruit-forward on the nose, this wine is crisp and elegant on the palate.
- 2021 Piocho Rosé – A rosé of Cabernet Franc with notes of strawberry, peach, floral rose, and a whisper of tobacco. Bright, crisp, and lightly spiced—it’s ideal for sipping during a summer polo match.
- 2019 Piocho Patrón – A richly concentrated estate red blend with a dark ruby hue. Blueberry, black cherry, clove, cedar wood, and plum show through both aromatically and on the palate.
- 2018 Piocho Reserve – A bold yet balanced blend: 57% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, and 7% Malbec. Fruity, spicy, and structured with soft tannins.
- 2019 Family Estate Brand – 80% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec. A darkly blue-colored wine with a medium body and silky structure. The palette consists of spice notes with dried black cherries, plum and violets.
- 2019 Family Estate Ten~Goal – An elegant Bordeaux-style blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon. Aromas of chocolate, violets, bing cherries, and toasted oak make it both powerful and poised.

From our tasting vantage point, we enjoyed sweeping views of two regulation-sized polo fields and the majestic Santa Ynez Mountains. Polo is not just a pastime here—it’s a passion. The family behind Happy Canyon Vineyards fuses their love for the sport with their dedication to crafting world-class wines.
Wine club members can even extend their visit with an overnight stay in one of the thoughtfully designed onsite cottages. With sumptuous interiors and peaceful surroundings, it’s the ultimate wine country escape.
One of the highlights of the year at Piocho Ranch is the Santa Ynez Valley Polo Classic—a philanthropic event supporting People Helping People. The backdrop of rolling hills and emerald fields sets the stage for thrilling matches, where players and horses alike display incredible skill and precision. Between matches, guests enjoy Happy Canyon wines, barbecue, and a festive hat contest.
Whether it’s the world-class wine, the thrill of polo, or the serene beauty of the landscape that calls to you, Piocho Ranch and Happy Canyon Vineyards offers a distinctive blend of luxury, heritage, and tranquility in the heart of Santa Ynez Wine Country.
