Sun, Wind, and Wine Festival

The windswept vineyards of the Santa Lucia Highlands have long been a darling of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay lovers, but during the annual Sun, Wind & Wine Festival, the region truly shows off. Held this year at the stunning and typically private Mer Soleil Winery, the 18th annual celebration brought together some of California’s most exciting winemakers, chefs, and wine enthusiasts for an afternoon that felt equal parts luxury wine tasting and laid-back coastal party.

Perched above Monterey County’s rolling hills, the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA may be relatively small, but its reputation is anything but. Thanks to cool Pacific breezes, dramatic elevations, and generations of meticulous farming, the region consistently produces elegant, vibrant wines with serious pedigree. Translation: if you love beautifully balanced Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, you’re in very good hands here.

More than 40 wineries poured over 100 wines throughout the afternoon, giving guests the chance to taste everything from crisp sparkling wines to rich Syrah and silky single-vineyard Pinot Noir. Familiar names like Bernardus, Belle Glos, Caraccioli, Mer Soleil, ROAR, Pisoni, Siduri, Talbott, Wrath, and Morgan Winery drew enthusiastic crowds, while smaller producers added plenty of hidden gems to discover between pours.

What makes Sun, Wind & Wine particularly special is how personal it feels. Winemakers weren’t tucked away behind polished marketing booths — they were actively pouring wines, sharing vineyard stories, discussing vintages, and talking terroir with guests who genuinely wanted to learn. It’s the kind of event where a casual tasting can unexpectedly turn into a 20-minute conversation about coastal fog patterns and clone selection.

Of course, exceptional wine requires equally strong food, and the culinary lineup delivered. Guests grazed their way through gourmet bites from beloved regional restaurants and artisans, including fresh seafood, handmade pastas, artisan cheeses, chocolates, and decadent pastries that somehow convinced everyone they still had room for dessert.

Live music drifted across the vineyard while guests lingered over glasses of Chardonnay and bubbles beneath the warm spring sun. And with many of the featured wines available for purchase onsite, plenty of attendees left with bottles destined for future dinner parties — or at least plans to recreate the afternoon back home.

More than just another tasting event, Sun, Wind & Wine captured the spirit of the Santa Lucia Highlands itself: relaxed but refined, deeply rooted in agriculture, and quietly producing some of California’s most compelling wines. For wine lovers, it’s the kind of festival that reminds you why wine country weekends are never really just about the wine.
