With much of Napa Valley known for its modern monuments to wine, it’s nice to take a step back and see what the valley was like in the past. Located in St. Helena, Freemark Abbey is a winery that is best known for crafting classically structured Cabernet Sauvignon from premier sites, including the iconic Bosché and Sycamore vineyards.
Freemark Abbey’s story began with one of California’s first female vintners, Josephine Tychson, who produced the winery’s first vintage in 1886. Fast forward nearly a century to when Freemark Abbey competed in the famous “Judgment of Paris” blind tasting. It’s worth noting that Freemark Abbey was the only winery with both a red and white wine represented.
The Freemark Abbey property is home to a historic, hand-built stone winery that’s a century-old and remains to this day an important part of the winery’s identity. The winery is quite spacious and in 2016 it underwent a renovation that included modern updates while preserving the historical building. The wine library, barrel room, as well as several other rooms are perfect for entertaining and if you’re looking to go wine tasting with a group of friends or clients.
It was my first time visiting Freemark Abbey and upon arrival, my boyfriend and I were warmly greeted with a glass of Viognier. We were then led to the stunning Library Room and the table was pre-set for our Decades Tasting experience.
What’s unique about this tasting experience is that it provides visitors a rare opportunity to sample 30-year-old wines (Cabernet Bouché and Sycamore Vineyard Cabernet). Overall, six wines across three decades are included in the tasting and it showcases how Freemark Abbey’s single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons age and evolve over time.
With such an unique setting coupled with an interesting tasting lead you to realize that Freemark Abbey perfectly marries the past with the present. Considering the winery is so beautiful, spacious, and perfect for entertaining, I hope to visit again and perhaps attend a wine event or dinner.
