Located on the banks of Soquel Creek in Capitola is a landmark that offers fine dining in a romantic setting. Since 1947, Shadowbrook restaurant has and continues to be a favorite with locals and visitors alike. Set over a labyrinthine three floors and seven rooms, Shadowbrook is a culinary excursion that is well worth a visit.
Upon arrival, diners can either take the famous hillside “cable car” or meander down the garden path through the lush vegetation in order to reach the restaurant’s entry. Descending the lush hillside of tropical plants, one almost feels like they’ve escaped to Hawaii.
On that tropical note, I started out my evening with a Guavapolitan, a twist on the classic Cosmo, with guava nectar instead of cranberry. It paired perfectly with a seared ahi tower with wasabi cream, passion fruit, and soy-tempura.
The restaurant offers fine food, paired with a broad variety of alcoholic beverages. Shadowbrook even has their own wine bottled under the label, Chateau Brook, which is produced in Santa Barbara County.
If you’re seeking an indulgent entrée, consider their classic slow-roasted angus prime rib. It’s served with fantastic creamed spinach and mashed potatoes. If you’re looking for something slightly less hearty, their black truffle gnocchi featuring goat cheese béchamel, truffle oil, and seasonal vegetables is delicious – especially when accompanied by the optional 6oz filet brochettes.
If you’re looking for something on the lighter side, I’d suggest ordering the classic “Pacific Rim” salmon featuring sea greens, ginger-wasabi and ponzu sauces. It such a great dish that it was once featured in Bon Appétit magazine.
Be sure to save room for dessert! Many of the items feature Marianne’s ice cream – a Santa Cruz classic. I indulged in the Jack Daniel’s Mud Pie featuring Marianne’s Coffee-Crunch ice cream, Oreo crust, caramel, and whiskey-chocolate sauce. Also, the bread pudding – it’s beautifully presented and topped with delightful whipped cream. All in all, you can’t go wrong with any of the dessert items!
If you find you need a ride at the end of the night, you can take advantage of the Shadowbrook Shuttle that offers guests a complimentary taxi service in a fleet of Classic New York style taxis within a three mile radius.
When all this is combined with the friendly and attentive service, you’ll find Shadowbrook is the perfect restaurant for a memorable night out on California’s coast.
