Nestled in the heart of Berkeley, California, the Berkeley City Club stands as a testament to the brilliance of renowned architect Julia Morgan. Originally designed as the Berkeley Women’s City Club in 1927, this architectural masterpiece has evolved into a cultural and historical landmark. It continues to captivate visitors with its timeless beauty.
Julia Morgan, the first woman to receive an architect’s license in California, left an indelible mark on the state’s architectural landscape. Best known for her work on the Hearst Castle, Morgan’s diverse portfolio also includes the Berkeley City Club. The building seamlessly combines Moorish and Gothic influences, creating a unique aesthetic that sets it apart.
During the holidays, the Berkeley City Club transforms into a magical wonderland. The grand entrance, adorned with wreaths and twinkling lights, invites visitors into a world of elegance and holiday cheer.
The Great Hall with its vaulted ceilings and grand chandeliers is the perfect venue for a holiday soirée. Christmas trees and festive garlands enhance the grandeur of the space.
Today, The Berkeley City Club serves as a multifaceted establishment – it’s a club, event venue, and hotel. The hotel features a variety of well-appointed rooms and suites, each uniquely furnished with a classic touch. Complimentary breakfast is included for hotel guests and one can enjoy it in an elegant dining room adorned with white tablecloths.
There are wonderful food and drink options onsite, including Julia’s Restaurant and Morgan’s Bar and Lounge. One evening, I visited Morgan’s Bar and Lounge for happy hour and enjoyed listening to a local piano player and a vocalist while sipping on a festive cocktail.
One of the Berkeley City Club’s hidden gems is its magnificent indoor swimming pool. Designed with Julia Morgan’s signature attention to detail, the pool area is a tranquil oasis that transports visitors to a bygone era.
In addition to the pool and onsite dining options, other amenities available for guests to enjoy include:
- Central Works Theatre
- Self-Service Laundry Facilities
- Bocce Court
- Fitness room
- Fitness classes such as Zumba, yoga, etc.
The Berkeley City Club is more than a historic building—it’s a living testament to the enduring legacy of Julia Morgan. From the grand entrance to the hidden treasures like the indoor pool, it invites visitors to experience the holidays in a setting that seamlessly combines history, artistry, and cheer.
