Just outside the walls of Marrakech’s bustling Medina is Jardin Majorelle. It has an intriguing tropical setting that was influenced by iconic French fashion designer, Yves Saint-Laurent and his partner, Pierre Bergé.
There’s a Moorish art-deco style villa in an iconic, eye-popping blue color, that’s trademarked as Majorelle blue. Guests can stroll a two and a half acre botanical garden and marvel at palms, other-worldly cacti, bamboo and tropical flowers that were transplanted from across the globe.
Water features and other tasteful monuments create an incredible sense of tranquility and relaxation. I was especially in awe of a huge pond full of waterlilies that reflect the lush foliage and architecture.
Jardin Majorelle is also home to the Berber Museum that features exhibits of colorful costumes and angular jewelry from the Moroccan tribe that inspired both Majorelle and Yves Saint Laurent. Marrakech deeply influenced YSL’s life and work, particularly his discovery of color. He was influenced by the local fashion, craftsmanship, colors, nature, and traditional Moroccan fashion. It was Yves Saint Laurent that inspired use of traditional Moroccan dress, such as the kaftan and djellaba in haute couture fashion.
Today, the fashion designer’s memorial is on the grounds and the street the villa is on was renamed Rue Yves Saint Laurent in his honor. Jardin Majorelle attracts crowds from all over the world and it’s a must-see when in Marrakech.
So vibrant and great inspiration!!! Thanks for sharing!
