The Harbor House Inn is rich in history and offers an upscale experience on the Mendocino Coast. All of the produce served at the restaurant is sourced from the on-site garden or their 320-acre farm located about 25 minutes south by car. With two Michelin stars and a Michelin green clover for its sustainability efforts, Chef Matthew Kammerer and his team offer a world-class dining experience that’s specific to its region.
I recently visited the inn’s intimate restaurant for lunch. For lunch we were seated at a table next to massive windows that frame the Pacific Ocean. Overall, the ambiance pairs well with the coastal cuisine served. The menu is a pre-set tasting menu, but guests have the option to order additional items to start such as gourmet popcorn and/or fresh sourdough bread accompanied by seaweed butter.
The wine list is extensive with a primary focus on French and Californian wines. In addition, the wine program spotlights small producers, most of whom farm organically and/or have very high quality practices in the vineyard and the cellar. Beyond wine, they offer sake, cider, and beer.
I started my meal off with a glass of Pierre Gimmonel & Fils Champagne and it paired lovely with the Tomales Bay Miyagi Oysters. The oysters were accompanied by salted plum and preserved lemon, sea vegetable vinaigrette, and tomarillo ponzu.
A plate of grilled Kalette with Penny Royal laychee and ground cherry followed. This was my first time trying Kalette and it’s a cross between kale and Brussels sprouts. The light cheese and ground cherry complimented the kalette nicely.
Later, we had more protein-heavy courses such as Seafood Soup with poached rockfish, Dungeness crab, and romanesco! The fish was soft, delicate, flaky and the creamy soup base that accompanied it was delightful!
The tender Pork Shoulder Confit with grilled cabbage, roasted meat jus, calhikari rice and pickles was well balanced. The pork cut beautifully and the sides complimented the flavors nicely.
For dessert I had Earl Grey Ice Cream and it was accompanied by a warm infusion of garden herbs.
After a great meal we wandered down to the secluded beach just below. It’s a private cove and makes for a wonderful spot to dip your toes in the ocean and go for a stroll. With incredible views from every angle you will find the Harbor House Inn difficult to leave. I may have to come back for dinner!
