Nestled in the hills above Florence in the town of Fiesole sits Belmond’s Villa San Michele, a former medieval monastery that’s steeped in history. It’s even said that the villa’s facade can be attributed to Michelangelo. In front of the hotel’s facade, you’ll find an eye-catching vehicle, an electric 1950s Fiat Musone that’s immaculately restored and features a customized floral design by contemporary Italian artist Lucamaleonte.
The hotel has 45 rooms and suites that are elegantly decorated. Upon arrival, I was pleased to be upgraded to a suite with its own garden and sun deck. Inside my suite, I found a thoughtful welcome amenity waiting for me; a bottle of orange liquor and homemade biscottis presented in packaging that resembled The Duomo and Giotto’s Bell Tower. As for the suite itself, the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was spacious. To top it off, the bathroom was stocked with my favorite Aqua di Parma bath products.
When evening arrived, turn down service was provided. It was a sweet surprise to find a square of chocolate on my bed each evening – talk about sweet dreams!
The main attraction of Villa San Michele are perhaps its views. The views from nearly every part of the property are perhaps the best in the city – especially when the sun starts to set. It’s lovely to sit or stroll the lush Italian gardens as the sky begins to change colors. It looks as though the sky has been set on fire with pink and orange sorbet accents.
Every morning I was excited to wake up as I knew there was a delicious full-service breakfast waiting for me. I personally loved the custard filled croissants, they were dangerously delicious!
As for lunch, my boyfriend, Matthew and I dined al fresco by the pool. We started out our meal with a refreshing Aperol spritz and bruschetta. As for mains, I had the spaghetti alle vongole while Matthew had the lobster gnocchi.
After lunch, we spent the afternoon lazing by the panoramic heated swimming pool with an Aperol Spritz in hand. The pool is situated on a plateau above the gardens that’s reached by a winding path. It’s the perfect spot to daydream or catch up on a good book.
I’ve stayed at many Belmond properties and have to say that each one has perfected, “the art of apertivo.” Bartenders use their creativity to craft perfectly paired specialities right in front of guests that celebrate authentic flavors and regional ingredients. I enjoyed lounging at the stylish Bar Il Chiostrino and sipping delicious signature cocktails.
If you’re a wine enthusiast, visit Cella Vinaria, the hotel’s renovated wine cellar. While sitting at a beautiful table inside the wine cellar, you’ll be guided by a wonderful sommelier and enjoy a wine tasting that’s accompanied by delicious local cheeses and cold cuts.
As for dinner, I’d recommend Ristorante La Loggia located on site. It offers a true taste of Tuscany and offers unparalleled views of Florence framed by the property’s 15th-century arches. The restaurant puts an avant-garde take on classic Italian dishes.
If you stay at the hotel during the Summer months, on Thursday through Sunday from 8:00pm – 10:30pm, Pizzeria San Michele is open. One can sit in the enchanting Italian gardens or nestle into a comfy spot under the pergola while watching each dish be prepared.
If you’re keen to learn about Tuscan cuisine, sign up for a hands-on cooking class at the Cookery School with Belmond San Michele’s Chef. In just a short amount of time, their culinary school in Italy has established a worldwide reputation for excellence. One can also join their pizzaiolo for a lively lesson. Do note that advanced reservations are necessary.
Overall, Belmond’s Villa San Michele is the perfect Florentine hideaway that offers the best of the best!
